The impact of the corona virus pandemic on the world

 Covid-19

The world is currently in an uproar with the outbreak of the corona virus which has become a global pandemic. Starting from the city of Wuhan, China, the virus that has become known as Covid-19 has spread not only throughout the country, but throughout the world. Not a single country is free from the ferocity of this corona virus.

One by one the victims died from contracting the corona virus. Not only tens, but in the hundreds, even thousands of victims in every country. If accumulated globally, the number of victims of this covid-19 virus can reach tens of thousands of people. What a non-natural disaster tragedy.

The number of fatalities due to the corona virus is allegedly because the government in each country is not ready to face it. In fact, it cannot be denied that governments in various countries seem overwhelmed when they are “fighting” against the corona virus. The limited number of health personnel, both doctors and nurses and the lack of PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) resulted in not optimal health services. In fact, not a few health workers have also become victims of the corona virus 'malignancy'.

It is undeniable that the corona virus is shaking human civilization in the world. Each country through its authority asks its people to stay at home, maintain physical (physical distancing) and social (social distancing) distances and even carry out lockdowns (regional quarantine) to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Not just an appeal but strict rules and prohibitions for doing activities outside the home.

The corona virus is endemic in various parts of the world and the preventive measures taken have certainly caused significant changes to the lives of the world community. Then, what is the impact of this corona pandemic which will certainly make an impression on people's lives, or even cause conditions that are no longer the same as before.

The business industry is affected by the corona virus pandemic

The application of social distancing and physical distancing certainly limits the space and mobility of the community. Even the lockdown results in people being unable to move outside the home even for those who are daily workers or street traders.

It is acknowledged or not that many parties feel the negative impact of the current corona virus pandemic. People's income is clearly reduced, especially those with daily income such as daily laborers, street vendors, online motorcycle taxis, parking attendants, and others.

The negative impact of the spread of the corona virus is not only felt by the community, but also the business world, both small, medium and large scale. Here are some of the business industries affected by the corona virus pandemic.

    Tourism and hospitality industry

During the holiday season the tourism and hospitality industry is sure to reach its heyday. The level of tourist visits to various tourist attractions has increased, where tourist spots are always crowded and even crowded with mass crowds of both domestic and foreign tourists. Likewise with the hotel industry, where hotel occupancy rates have increased. There are almost no empty hotel rooms, all filled with guests.

However, this condition has now changed drastically, where tourist attractions are deserted and even the management has to close and stop their service operations. This was done solely to avoid the crowd.

The corona virus pandemic has caused people to be afraid and increase their alertness so they choose to stay at home and limit or even not do activities outside the home at all.

As a result, the public canceled their travel plans and hotel bookings that had been previously booked. As a result of all that, of course, the level of income from the tourism and hospitality sector has dropped dramatically.

In the tourism sector, it includes the travel agency business such as travel, trains, and airlines. Maybe they still open travel services to and from various destination cities. However, the maximum number and capacity of passengers is certainly limited, not as many as before the corona virus pandemic emerged.

Railway companies and airlines will certainly apply physical distancing to their passengers, so that there is a safe distance between one passenger and another. Practically, if previously the maximum capacity was 50 people, now it is only able to accommodate half or even a quarter.

Not only that, to ensure the safety and security of passengers, the company must also provide a digital thermometer to measure the body temperature of each passenger. If there are passengers who are found to be in an unhealthy condition, they are not allowed to travel and board the means of transportation.

This condition clearly resulted in the tourism and hospitality industry including travel agents sluggish and even slumped. If this condition continues, the industry may collapse.

UMKM Industry (Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises)

Not all people have a job status as permanent employees. Some of them, even most of them, are micro, small and medium enterprises, who are included in groups or groups of people who have non-permanent and daily income. The spread of the corona virus has dealt a hard blow to this group of people, because they were "forced" to stop their business activities. This means that practically their income is reduced and even they have no income at all.

Economic shocks began to be felt when the 'helplessness' as a result of the corona virus pandemic was hit with life pressures. On the one hand they are required to be able to face situations and conditions in order to survive, but on the other hand they are also faced with dependents such as daily living costs, both consumption and other costs including credit installments.

When they are in a jobless position without income, they also have to make ends meet to continue their lives. Obviously they will not be able to survive in such conditions. There needs to be government intervention to provide subsidies that are at least able to guarantee their basic needs. In this case, the government needs to cooperate with related parties to provide leeway for all kinds of payments, such as credit installments, electricity costs, and others.

The negative impact of the corona virus pandemic

Not a single country wants its territory to be affected by the corona disease outbreak. But the rice has become porridge, the micro-sized virus has spread and infected many people in various countries. Preventive actions such as lockdown, social distancing, and physical distancing are believed to be able to prevent the spread of the virus. By minimizing interaction and direct contact, it is alleged to be able to minimize the transmission of this virus infection.

Staying at home in an effort to quarantine or self-isolate can indeed reduce the level of interaction and direct contact, so that the spread of the corona virus can be prevented. However, this step did not automatically have a positive impact, because there were also negative impacts.

Drug and alcohol abuse is on the rise

Freedom that is shackled often leads to bad actions to get rid of boredom and feelings and physicality that are confined like a prison. People who are usually free to carry out activities to make ends meet or carry out work are suddenly "forced" to stay indoors, of course, causing extreme saturation. Especially for those who really can't be calm and stay quiet at home.

This condition causes some people to feel stressed and even frustrated, thus diverting them to things that are less positive and supporting productivity. One of them is the abuse of drugs and alcohol, to simply spend time or entertain yourself in a boredom that is not sure when it will end.

Shopping panic and scarcity of goods

The number of corona virus victims is increasing day by day. Information about the malignancy of this virus is confusing, so that people are not well educated. As a result, there was tremendous panic among the people. Moreover, the government has appealed to stay at home, including those who work to be sent home in the sense of working from home to break the chain of spreading the virus.

The panic of the people who wanted to survive the corona pandemic plus the recommendation to stay at home resulted in panic buying. As a result, there was a shortage of items as personal protective equipment from viruses, such as masks, hand sanitizers, alcohol, and others. This scarcity causes the price of these goods to soar in the market.

Not only personal protective items from viruses, but even vitamins that support endurance have also been sold off store shelves and pharmacies. Even in Indonesia itself, spices that support stamina such as ginger, temu comedy, and others also experience price hikes due to the high demand.

The scarcity of various items even for medical needs such as masks and personal protective equipment (PPE) shows that the government is not ready to face this corona virus pandemic. Medical personnel who are at the forefront of the 'battle' against the coronavirus are not equipped with sufficient 'weapons'. As a result, not a few medical personnel, both doctors and nurses, have also become victims of the corona virus.

Medical personnel experience physical and mental exhaustion

Medical personnel, both doctors and nurses, are at the forefront of the 'battle' against the coronavirus. They do work that millions of ordinary people cannot. They have the expertise, knowledge and competent skills to deal with patients infected with the corona virus.

The number of corona patients increasing every day is forcing medical personnel to work extra hard. This clearly causes fatigue both physically and psychologically. They are also threatened with stress, hurt feelings, frustration, and even depression.

This condition is exacerbated by the lack of availability of medical equipment needed to protect oneself, such as masks and PPE (Personal Protective Equipment). Even though they are the group most susceptible to contracting the virus. Sure enough, not a few doctors and nurses were infected with the corona virus and some of them died while on duty.

The grief felt by medical personnel is of course not only the loss of colleagues and fear of infection, but also of being far from family. Most of them do not dare to go home and prefer to stay in the hospital. They position themselves as carriers (carriers of the virus) who are at risk of transmitting to their families.

    Changes in interacting and socializing

Corona virus transmission occurs from droplets or fluids that come out when sneezing or coughing. When the viruses in these droplets stick to media such as tables, clothes, paper, and others, they are able to survive in a matter of hours or even days. Therefore, since the outbreak of the corona virus there have been social changes in society with regard to how to interact.

People are now avoiding handshakes, cipika cipiki or kissing the right and left cheeks, hugging, even to speak they maintain a minimum distance of one meter. This is clearly outside the community's habit of socializing and building intimacy. If before the corona virus, it was easy for people to touch each other in general. However, not anymore.

    Decreased use of public transportation

Provision of mass public transportation by each state stakeholder aims to facilitate public mobility and reduce congestion and pollution. Before the corona virus appeared, mass transportation was really used by the community to get to their destination faster without being stuck in traffic. Every day the users of mass transportation, both buses and local trains, are always packed with passengers. This means that in a bus or train carriage there is a crowd.

Now people are afraid to use mass public transportation. Because, the risk of transmission of the corona virus is high, where people huddle in one transportation fleet, so it does not allow for physical distancing.

In the future, people will be more selective in using mass public transportation. They tend to prefer to use private vehicles to support their daily activities and mobility.

    Increase in non-cash transactions

Non-cash transactions have developed quite rapidly. This is supported by the development of increasingly advanced e-commerce technology that allows people to make buying and selling transactions online.

Now since the corona virus has spread to various countries, the number of non-cash transactions has increased. Many merchants or stores restrict and even not accept cash transactions, and are diverted to non-cash transactions, both transfers and swipes of debit or credit cards on EDC (Electronic Data Capture) machines.

The increase in non-cash transactions was triggered by people's fear of physical money insecurity. This is because money, both paper and metal, is at risk of being a medium for transmission of the corona virus. It is true, given that physical money easily and quickly changes hands from one consumer to another, making it risky to be afflicted with various germs and viruses, including corona.

The positive impact of the corona virus pandemic

The spread of the corona virus which has become a global pandemic is very disturbing for various groups. This virus seems to "destroy" the economy and civilization of the world community. The interaction pattern that has been going on for so many years has changed drastically and seems to have turned 180 degrees. Likewise, the people's economy, which sloped down without shock, was suddenly torn apart by the attack of the corona virus which forced them to limit and even stop their economic activities.

Behind the "disaster", of course, there are lessons to be learned. Likewise with this corona virus pandemic. Not all of them have a negative impact, but there are also positive impacts.

Public awareness of a clean and healthy lifestyle has increased

One highly recommended way to prevent transmission of the corona virus is to wash your hands frequently with soap in running water. Previously, many people neglected to clean their hands, even when they wanted to eat. Now, they really maintain personal hygiene including their hands to prevent transmission of the corona virus and keep themselves healthy.

Not only washing hands, people have also started to adopt a healthy lifestyle, by maintaining daily nutritional intake. They eat vegetables and fruit in a balanced way u

Community vigilance is not only limited to cleanliness and health, but also the environment. With this corona virus pandemic, people maintain the cleanliness of their respective environments by spraying disinfectants periodically to kill germs and viruses.

     Clear skies, less pollution

High community mobility, especially in big cities, has a negative impact on the environment, namely the emergence of pollution from vehicle fumes and also factories. The emergence of the covid-19 type of corona virus forced a halt to economic activity, where workers working from home and factories reduce or even stop their operations.

The impact is that the air is cleaner and healthier to breathe, because pollution is reduced. Not only that, the sky looked bright blue again. The rivers seemed clearer. Recognized or not, this corona virus pandemic seems to be a natural reset button for recovery.
